I wasn’t afraid of the noises until I noticed. At night, the nurses came in pairs.

Home again
“Honey, are you back yet?” I ask, as the living room door opens behind me. Someone appreciatively whispers “No…” into my ear.
Don’t
I was told not to leave my room after dark. As I heard it crawl towards me and the door refused to open, I understood.
Next
Up in the attic, I was puzzled to see pictures of me climbing the stairs and sitting where I sat. It was too late when I saw what was next.
Talking to Myself
When I first able to hear again I would often talk to myself when I was alone, just to enjoy the sound in my ears. I stopped shortly after, once I starting hearing replies to my conversations.
Driving
I was alarmed to see a woman cross the empty road in the dead of night. More so later, when she crossed it again.
trapped
The smell of rot came when the lights died. In the quiet of the elevator, I heard the soft sound of bare feet.
Forgetfully?
“I’ve forgotten to turn off the car lights yet again” I think and reach for the car keys. Then I realize that in the darkness outside my window no rear lights are glowing, but two red eyes staring at me.
Living Alone
Having a light burn out is creepy enough when you’re living alone. Having a light turn on is even worse.
One bloody hand print
This morning I opened the curtains to find a bloody hand print from the outside of the window. I live on the third floor.
The beast
Imagine a fearsome creature, neither man nor animal, with matted fur, spotted with clotted blood, having razor-sharp claws and teeth, big, strong, virtually impregnable and with greedy glowing eyes. Even this being would be afraid of what’s outside your door waiting for you to already come out.
Cathy
Each night on the stroke of midnight his young, dead wife would text him. Her final message, the one they found beside the body, read, ‘That tapping on the window is me’.
Warning
She climbed into the tub, ready to relax and enjoy the warmth and comfort of the bath.
She lays back, but she immediately feels her life slipping as she reads the label: “WARNING Do not submerge in water; may cause short-circuiting.”
Going Green
Going Green
George met Sally at a Biology lecture and asked her for her opinion of his senior project to increase the wetlands frog population. Sally accompanied him and impressed by his work surprised him with a kiss, only to hear a loud ‘poof’ and her voice blurt out a throaty, “Ribbit!”
Don’t T&D
I texted my daughter to ask her exactly where I was supposed to pick her up. Just as I hit “send” she bounced off my hood, crashed through my windshield and landed lifeless in my lap.
R. I. P.
The battle had been particularly bloody with casualty rates spiking on both sides. As the smoke and haze cleared; as the dead were being recovered from their foxholes and the surrounding field; I took pause at how peaceful I look.
boo
I was going to hide in the cupboard, she would never find me there. But it was taken by her late husband.
Daring
“Don’t you dare!” he shouted, running towards me, trying to get the weapon from me.
But I dared… and I dared skillfully.
Dark Side
They were delighted to finally hear I have a dark side after confessing, during our team’s drinking session, that I’ve carefully planned to really hurt people for making fun of me all the time. I was too glad to see them truly happy for me for once that I decided to postpone tonight’s plan for them until the next team gathering.
Drained
As expected, I saw another disgusting pile of my roommate’s hair clogging the shower drain. Irritated, I started to forcefully pull the strands out only to hear someone’s screams of pain screech out from the drain pipe.
